Moscow crt sees no proof in Telegram’s inability to share keys

MOSCOW, May 30 (PRIME) -- The Tagansky District Court of Moscow said on Wednesday that popular messenger Telegram, which is blocked in Russia, has not presented any proof of its inability to provide encryption to the Federal Security Service.

“The reference of…Telegram…on impossibility of fulfilling the duty stipulated by the law…due to technical reasons, cannot be treated as a reason to reject satisfaction of requirements…as Telegram, an organizer of information distribution in the Internet and a provider of a technical opportunity to an unlimited circle of people to use the services it provides, must execute the obligation stipulated by the law on providing a federal executive authority in the sphere of security with the information required to decode accepted, transferred, delivered and/or processed electronic messages,” the court said.

Telegram also failed to provide any materials proving its inability to hand over encryption keys to the Federal Security Service.

The communications service blocked Telegram on April 16. The watchdog started blocking the IP addresses, mainly of Amazon and Google, that Telegram used to skirt the muting, which was followed by a wave of complaints of inaccessibility of many services.
